 Sunday was one of those "I am so glad I live in Washington State" days. Thanks to an invitation from Northwest Wild Country co-host Bill Herzog I got the chance to experience fishing on some of the most pristine Steelhead water in the world.

 Before I tell you about the fishing let me fill you in on Bill. This guy lives to fish and has written the book, in fact a few of them, on Steelhead fishing in the Northwest.  Now to the fishing. Bill and I were hosted to fish the Lower Quinault by Rich Underwood, a Quinault Tribal Councilman and Fishing Guide.

 Rich was born on this river and has spent more than 25 years guiding and enhancing the fishery. Did you know that the Quinault Indian Nation has the biggest Steelhead Hatchery in the world ?

 These folks plant a million smolts a year and between one to two percent make it back into the river as full grown Steelies. In addition to the Broodstock the Quinault also boasts HUGE Native Steelhead and 30 pound bucks are not unheard of.

 What makes fishing the lower Quinault most unique is that you ARE ALONE. We spent an entire day working miles of perfect Steelhead green water and only saw one boat the entire time !

 Rich said the Spring run peaks in March and, had we booked at that time, might have seen a half dozen boats but in late April it was just Bill, Rich, myself and some NICE fish. Check out this photo gallery for proof !

 All in all we caught the 16 pounder that I kept a 14, 12 and 8 pounder we released and Bill caught one FAT Dolly Varden trout. We also lost two nice ones. While this could be a lifetimes worth of hookups for the average Steelheader these numbers are modest for this well managed Tribal Fishery.

 Rich is a guide who will fish as long as you want and even went out to fish some more after Bill and I called it quits at 4:00pm. He has all the gear and the knowledge of a dude who has been fishing these waters since he could hold a pole. He also happens to be on of the nicest men I have ever met and will be happy to share the history of this very special part of the planet that people come from all over the world to enjoy while you search for the big one.

 While I have caught bigger Salmon, Halibut etc. this 16 pounder was my biggest Steelhead and I know there are LOTS of bigger ones swimming around out there. Next Spring I plan to find one !
